Along the western edge visitors can see the cluster of colonial-era mansions known locally as the Magnificent Seven; a major cricket ground, the Queen’s Park Oval, sits adjacent to the lawn and hosts high-profile matches. The Emperor Valley Zoo occupies part of the park and offers family-oriented exhibits and animal enclosures.
The Savannah developed during the colonial period as a communal open space and was later surrounded by residential and civic buildings; many of the mansions and sporting facilities date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time the area has become the focal point for national celebrations, sporting events, and public recreation.
