Pyramids of Meroe
Archaeological Site Ancient Nubian pyramids and royal burial complex
Site of the Kushite royal necropolis near Karima: rows of steep, narrow pyramids mark ancient burials at Meroe. Visitors come for archaeology, guided desert excursions and views across the surrounding sand and rock.
The Pyramids of Meroe are a cluster of Kushite royal pyramids and archaeological remains located in northeastern Sudan, notable as the funerary complex of the ancient Kingdom of Kush and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site contains dozens of small, steep-sided pyramids grouped into cemetery fields, many of which served as tombs for Kushite rulers and royal family members. Visitors see the pyramids’ characteristic narrow bases and steep profiles, together with associated temple ruins and relief fragments.
Built and used by rulers of the Kingdom of Kush during the first millennium BCE and into the early centuries CE, the pyramids functioned as royal burials and ritual sites. The complex fell out of use in late antiquity and was documented and excavated by archaeologists from the 19th century onward; it is now protected and studied as an archaeological landscape.
The pyramids lie in the desert east of the Nile in River Nile State, Sudan, set among sandy plains and rocky outcrops. The archaeological area is remote from major cities and reached by road from regional centres.
- Viewing times: Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the low sun emphasizes the steep pyramid faces and the desert colors.
- Access: The site is in a remote desert area; access typically requires a vehicle and local guides are commonly used for transport and interpretation.
