The Primatial Cathedral of Bogotá is the main Roman Catholic cathedral on Plaza de Bolívar in central Bogotá and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Bogotá. The building is an important religious and civic landmark in the city’s historic centre.

The cathedral occupies the centre of the west side of the plaza and features a primarily neoclassical façade with an interior of chapels, altars and liturgical furnishings reflecting its long use as the principal church of the city. It functions for daily worship, major liturgies and official ceremonies.

The current cathedral stands on the site of earlier colonial-era churches dating back to the 16th century; the present building reflects extensive rebuilding and remodelling carried out in later centuries, resulting in the neoclassical appearance visible today.

The cathedral is located on Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá’s historic centre, opposite the National Capitol and within walking distance of many principal civic and judicial buildings.

• Approach the Catedral Primada from Plaza de Bolívar to view its grand neoclassical façade and to include the cathedral in a loop with the Capitolio and the Palacio de Justicia - this central route is the most convenient for first-time visitors.
• Visit early on weekdays to avoid large religious services and school groups that congregate at the cathedral; mornings before noon are usually quieter for a calm interior visit and clearer photography.
• If you want to avoid closures for worship, check mass schedules in advance - the cathedral frequently holds services and official religious events that can restrict access to parts of the interior.
