How to Get to Guatapé#
Guatapé is most commonly reached from Medellín by road: either a direct shuttle from José María Córdova Airport or a bus from Medellín’s terminals. For convenience pick a shuttle from MDE; for the lowest cost take a bus from Medellín.
José María Córdova International Airport (MDE): The main airport serving Medellín (in Rionegro). From MDE to Guatapé the drive is typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic; private shuttle services run directly to Guatapé (bookable at the airport or online) and cost roughly COP 40,000-70,000 per person. Taxis from MDE to Guatapé are available but expensive (expect significantly higher fares).
Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH): Olaya Herrera handles domestic flights into Medellín’s city airport; it’s farther from Guatapé than MDE for road transfers and fewer direct shuttle options run from EOH. You would transfer into Medellín then take a bus or shuttle to Guatapé.
Train: There is no intercity passenger rail to Guatapé.
Bus: Regular buses depart from Medellín’s Terminal del Norte (sometimes Terminal del Sur depending on operator) to Guatapé and take about 2-2.5 hours. Tickets are economical-expect roughly COP 10,000-20,000 one way (prices vary by operator). Buses usually stop at the main Guatapé terminal a short walk from the town centre and from the ferry to the rock (El Peñol).

- Airport shuttle (MDE → Guatapé) (COP 40,000-70,000) - Several private shuttle companies operate direct airport transfers from José María Córdova to Guatapé. They are door-to-door, convenient if you arrive late, and can be prebooked online or via travel desks at the airport.
- Public bus (Medellín → Guatapé) (COP 10,000-20,000) - Buses to Guatapé depart Medellín’s bus terminals and are the cheapest option. The trip takes about 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic; buses arrive at Guatapé’s central terminal within walking distance of attractions and the waterfront.
- Taxi / private transfer (COP 150,000+ (airport taxi, approximate)) - Taxis and private cars provide door-to-door service and flexibility to stop en route (e.g., at El Peñol). They are significantly more expensive than buses but useful if traveling in a group or with lots of luggage.
- Boat / ferry (on the lake) (COP 10,000-40,000 depending on route) - Short boat rides on Guatapé Reservoir link lakeside points and can be used to reach attractions along the shoreline. Boat services are informal; agree a fare in advance.
- Motorbike / bicycle rental (COP 30,000-80,000 per day) - Renting a motorbike or bicycle is popular for exploring the town and surrounding roads; traffic is light outside peak times but roads can be narrow. Helmets and local traffic rules should be followed.
