Precinct of Amun-Re
Archaeological Site Core temple complex of Karnak dedicated to Amun-Re
The main precinct of Amun-Re at Karnak Temple in Luxor, with monumental pylons, hypostyle halls and obelisks; a key stop for visitors studying New Kingdom funerary religion and massive stone architecture.
The Precinct of Amun‑Re is the principal and largest section of the Karnak temple complex on the east bank of the Nile at Luxor, dedicated to the god Amun‑Re. It is the major cult centre of ancient Thebes and contains some of the most extensive monumental temple architecture surviving from Pharaonic Egypt.
The Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 massive columns and towering central columns, long processional avenues lined with sphinxes and obelisks, and extensive courtyards and pillared halls built by successive pharaohs. The precinct is spread over a large archaeological area and is often visited alongside other Karnak temples and the nearby Luxor Temple.
Construction and enlargement of the precinct occurred over many centuries, with major building phases in the New Kingdom (roughly 16th to 11th centuries BC) by pharaohs such as Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Seti I and Ramesses II, and later additions in the Third Intermediate and Ptolemaic periods. The site served as a continuing centre of ritual and royal display throughout ancient Egyptian history.
The precinct lies within the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) on the east bank of the Nile, immediately north of the modern town centre and a short distance from Luxor’s principal tourist routes and museums.
