Preah Khan of Kompong Svay

Temple Vast remote Khmer temple complex east of Angkor

Far east of central Angkor, Preah Khan of Kompong Svay is an expansive, remote temple complex with crumbling galleries and classical Khmer carvings; travelers come for scale and solitude.

Preah Khan of Kompong Svay is a large, remote Khmer temple complex in eastern Cambodia that dates primarily to the 11th and 12th centuries. The complex covers an extensive area and was constructed in laterite and sandstone, reflecting both Hindu and later Buddhist use.

The site includes multiple enclosures, ruined towers and laterite galleries and is notable for its size and relatively low level of modern restoration compared with central Angkor sites. Visitors encounter wide, open ruins, large moats and evidence of ancillary structures that speak to its function as a regional administrative and religious center in the Angkorian period.

Preah Khan of Kompong Svay sits inland in eastern Cambodia and requires a substantial drive from the main tourism centers; its remoteness and scale are defining characteristics.

  • Age and scale: One of the largest and most remote Angkorian temple complexes, mainly dating to the 11th-12th centuries and showing both Hindu and Buddhist phases of use.
  • Condition and visitor experience: Lower levels and many structures remain unrestored and the site is often visited for its vast enclosures and quieter, less-restored atmosphere compared with Angkor proper.

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and much better light for photography; the site is remote and much quieter outside the middle of the day.
  • Plan for a long, rough drive from Siem Reap and arrange a vehicle with high clearance (4x4) or a local driver-allow a full day for travel and exploration rather than trying to rush it.
  • Take time to walk beyond the central ruin; the complex's extensive outer enclosures and isolated towers are easily missed by quick stops, and a guide will help point out the early Angkorian features and inscriptions.
