Prasat Prompil Loveng at a Glance#
About Prasat Prompil Loveng#
This unassuming temple shelters a seated Buddha beneath a small pavilion rather than within elaborate chambers and towers, and it is a solemn place to pause and pay respect. At the top of a series of low terraces flanked by naga balustrades, the roughly 12-foot Buddha looks out over a quiet, shady compound enclosed by a low wall.
While several similar shrines stand within Angkor Thom, Prasat Prompil Loveng is special because it houses the very Buddha image discovered in 1933 in the pit beneath the central sanctuary of Bayon, probably the image installed there by Jayavarman VII when he consecrated that temple. Found in fragments, it was reconstructed and presented to King Sisowath Monivong in 1935, who had it installed in this modest temple.
Exploring Prasat Prompil Loveng#
The entrance lies along the Victory Way between the Prasats Suor Prat and the Victory Gate, just opposite the toilets. Pass through the low enclosing wall and climb a series of low platforms, with lions flanking the stairs and naga balustrades surrounding the lower terraces.
As at other active Buddhist temples, remove your shoes before approaching the vihear that houses the Buddha image, and note the distinctly Cambodian face, thought to be modelled on Jayavarman VII. Before leaving, walk to the back of the temple for a photograph of the Prasats Suor Prat reflected in the pool built beside them.
