Praça dos Três Poderes
Plaza Brasília plaza flanked by Brazil's three government branches
Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília is framed by Oscar Niemeyer’s National Congress, the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Court; visitors study its modernist layout and civic architecture.
Praça dos Três Poderes is the central civic plaza of Brasília, Federal District, Brazil, established with the inauguration of the city in 1960 as the symbolic center of the national government.
The site is notable for housing the three main branches of Brazil’s federal government within a single open space: the executive Palácio do Planalto, the legislative Congresso Nacional, and the judicial Supremo Tribunal Federal. The plaza also contains public monuments such as the Monumento aos Candangos, and is a focal point for official ceremonies and national celebrations.
The plaza and surrounding buildings were laid out as part of Brasília’s planned city project conceived by urban planner Lúcio Costa; many of the principal buildings were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in the late 1950s and 1960, concurrent with the city’s inauguration.
Located on the Monumental Axis in the Plano Piloto sector of Brasília, the plaza forms the civic heart of the capital and is surrounded by government ministries and official residences.
- Ceremonial use: Official ceremonies and state events are commonly held on the plaza, with major national observances held on 21 April (Brasília's founding day).
- Best viewing points: The plaza sits at the heart of Brasília's Monumental Axis - the best viewpoints are from the opposite side of the axis or from the steps of the Congress for photographic compositions showing the three branches together.
What to See #
- Palácio do Planalto: One of the three principal government buildings on the plaza, completed in 1960 and serving as the official workplace of Brazil's president. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the building features a glass facade and a characteristic modernist colonnade.
- Congresso Nacional: The bicameral legislature's complex, consisting of two distinctive domed and bowl-shaped chambers linked by a central building, completed in the late 1950s and built to house the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate.
- Supremo Tribunal Federal: Seat of Brazil's highest court, the complex faces the plaza and was designed in the modernist style used across Brasília's civic buildings; it houses the Supreme Federal Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal).
- Monumento aos Candangos: A large public sculpture by Bruno Giorgi commemorating the workers who built Brasília, located on the plaza and commonly seen in photographs of the site.
