How to Get to Potidaea
Potidaea (near modern Nea Potidea) is reached via Thessaloniki (SKG). There is no direct rail link to the peninsula - buses (KTEL) and rental cars or taxis from Thessaloniki or Nea Moudania are the usual options.
Thessaloniki - Makedonia (SKG): Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is the main gateway for the Kassandra peninsula and the site of ancient Potidaea (near modern Nea Potidea). From SKG to Nea Potidea by car is roughly 60-90 minutes depending on traffic; taxis run the route in about 1-1.5 hours (expect fares in the €70-€110 range) and car hire is widely available (rates from about €25-€50/day).
Volos (VOL) / Kavala (KVA): These airports are farther and less convenient; Thessaloniki is the standard arrival point for Central Macedonia and Kassandra.
Train: There is no direct mainline rail service to the Kassandra peninsula. Rail travel ends in Thessaloniki; onward travel is by bus or car.
Bus: KTEL Chalkidiki and KTEL Thessaloniki run buses from Thessaloniki (Macedonia/KTEL intercity terminal) to towns like Nea Moudania; from Nea Moudania or Polychrono you can take local buses or taxis to Nea Potidea (the modern town near ancient Potidaea). Typical KTEL bus fares Thessaloniki→Nea Moudania are modest (around €4-€10) and journey times are about 1-1.25 hours, with an additional short hop to Nea Potidea.
How to Get Around Potidaea #
The site of ancient Potidaea corresponds to the modern town of Nea Potidaia on the Kassandra peninsula; the town itself is compact and easy to explore on foot. Getting there is easiest by car; there are also regional buses that link the peninsula with Thessaloniki and nearby towns, especially in summer. During peak season expect heavier traffic along the Kassandra coastal roads.
