Petralona Cave Archaeological Site

Petralona Cave is a limestone karst cave complex near the village of Petralona in Central Macedonia, Greece, notable for important Paleolithic human and faunal remains. The site is best known for the human skull recovered from the cave in 1960.

The show route passes through several large chambers containing extensive stalactite and stalagmite formations and exposed fossil-bearing sediments. Interpretive panels at the site summarize the palaeontological finds and the cave’s speleothems. Public access is by guided or managed path rather than unrestricted spelunking.

Excavations and palaeontological work at the site were carried out in the mid-20th century, and the skull discovery in 1960 brought scientific attention to the cave. Research and dating of the deposits have been the subject of ongoing study and debate among specialists.

The cave sits on the Chalkidiki peninsula in Central Macedonia, close to the modern village of Petralona; it lies inland from the northern Aegean coast and is accessed by road from the wider Thessaloniki area.

The easiest way to reach the cave is by car from Thessaloniki via the national roads (allow about 40-60 minutes depending on route and traffic); there is parking at the site and a short walk (typically 5-10 minutes) from the parking area to the cave entrance.
