The Polo Grounds was a series of sports stadiums in Upper Manhattan that served as a major venue for professional baseball and football from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. It was the longtime home of New York’s National League baseball franchise known as the New York Giants.

As a historic site rather than an active stadium, the location is primarily of interest for its sporting history and has markers and references indicating where the stands and field once stood. It figures in the history of American sport for famous games, records and its distinctive bathtub-shaped outfield in later reconstructions.

Several iterations of the Polo Grounds were built on or near the same site from the 1890s onward; the venue hosted professional baseball, football and boxing while undergoing rebuilds after fires and reconstructions. The Giants baseball club left New York for San Francisco in 1957, and the stadium complex was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by residential development.

Located in Upper Manhattan near 155th Street overlooking the Harlem River, the former stadium site sits within the Washington Heights neighbourhood of New York City.

  • Current status: The original stadium no longer exists; the site is now occupied by residential development and includes commemorative markers noting its sporting history.
