Coogan’s Bluff is a sandstone and urban promontory on the Manhattan side of the Harlem River whose slope overlooks the river and nearby athletic grounds. The bluff became well known in the 19th and 20th centuries because of its visual relationship to nearby stadiums.

Historically it provided informal vantage points where spectators could view events at the adjacent sports grounds. Today the area is integrated into public parkland and streetscapes with paths and viewpoints that look across the river.

The bluff took its name from a local landowner and developed as part of the changing urban fabric of northern Manhattan over the 19th and 20th centuries, including transportation and recreational uses.

Geographically it sits on the western edge of Harlem/Washington Heights overlooking the Harlem River, close to where the former Polo Grounds and later stadium sites stood.

• Views: Offers elevated views over the Harlem River and the area that once contained the Polo Grounds stadium; it is part of public parkland and pedestrian routes.

Reachable by subway: the 1 train to 157th Street or the A/B/C/D lines to 155th Street; local buses also serve the area. Walk from the 155th-159th Street area toward Edgecombe Avenue and the bluff.

• For the best views and least crowding, visit early morning on weekdays.
• Combine a visit with a walk in nearby Highbridge Park and the Polo Grounds Tennis Center.
• Be cautious: cliff edges can be steep and the area has a history of informal use; stick to marked paths.
