Poklonnaya Hill

Poklonnaya Hill is a raised area in western Moscow that forms the setting for the city’s main World War II memorial complex. The hill contains parkland, monuments and a major museum dedicated to the conflict.

The site includes broad promenades, memorial sculptures and a tall victory monument set within landscaped grounds; the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War occupies a purpose-built building on the hill. The ensemble was developed in the late 20th century to commemorate the Soviet role and losses in World War II.

Historically the hill served as one of the approaches to the city and later became the chosen location for a large-scale memorial project. Construction of the modern museum and memorial elements took place during the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods to create a unified commemorative complex.

Poklonnaya Hill lies in the western part of Moscow within the city’s built-up area and is directly served by public transport; it is part of Moscow’s urban park and memorial system.
