Poás Volcano National Park protects an active stratovolcano and surrounding montane forest in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. The volcano reaches an elevation of about 2,700 metres and is known for its large acidic main crater and active fumaroles.

Close viewpoints over the volcano’s principal crater and trails through cloud forest leading to the smaller Botos crater lake, which is set in native forest. Many visitors use the park’s short trails and visitor facilities to see the crater and the diverse high-elevation flora and birdlife.

The area was designated as protected land in the 20th century to conserve the volcanic landscape and surrounding ecosystems and to manage public access to an active volcanic site. The volcano has a well-documented history of periodic eruptions and phreatic activity that have caused temporary park closures.

The park lies northwest of San José in central Costa Rica, roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour drive from the capital depending on route and traffic, and is accessed from the town of Poásito and the surrounding Alajuela Province highlands.

  • Climate tip: At an altitude around 2,700 metres, weather can change rapidly - layers and rain protection are recommended even on clear days.
  • Safety and access: Park authorities often close crater viewpoints at short notice because of volcanic gases and eruptions; check current status before visiting.

What to See #

  • Main crater viewpoint: Main Crater Viewpoint - Provides the most direct views across the active crater and acidic crater lake; viewpoint infrastructure and access can be restricted when volcanic activity increases.
  • Botos Lake: Botos Lake (Laguna Botos) - A smaller, forested crater lake within the park reached by a short trail, set in montane cloud forest and popular for birdwatching.
  • Visitor facilities: Visitor Centre and trails - Park facilities include a visitor centre and several short, well-marked trails that lead to lookouts and forest areas; closures are common when gas emissions rise.
