Main image

Poás Volcano is a high stratovolcano in central Costa Rica known for a large, acidic crater lake and close, easily reached viewpoints. It is a frequent day-trip destination from nearby cities because paved roads and short trails lead close to the summit area.

Visitors commonly view the active crater and the smaller Botos crater lake via short walks from the main parking and visitor facilities. The summit area often produces fumarolic emissions and the crater colours can change with volcanic activity; park authorities intermittently restrict access for safety.

The volcanic complex sits within a national park on the Cordillera Central and rises above surrounding cloud forest. The park’s proximity to central population centres and paved road access make it one of the more accessible high-elevation volcanic sites in Costa Rica.

  • Elevation and best viewing time: The volcano summit is about 2,708 metres above sea level and is often shrouded in clouds; clear views are most likely early in the morning.
  • Access cautions: Access and viewing are sometimes restricted because of volcanic gas emissions and seismic activity, so check local park notices before visiting.

What to See #

  • Crater viewpoint: Main crater viewpoint on the park road that provides direct views into the active acidic crater and its often-coloured lake.
  • Trails and Botos lagoon: Short trails and boardwalks that lead to secondary viewpoints and the smaller, older Botos crater lake set in forest close to the main visitor area.

Tips for Visiting Poás Volcano #

  • Aim for early morning visits to Poás crater viewpoint - low clouds and mist build later in the day and can obscure the crater quickly.
  • Check the national park's official channels before you go: the park closes frequently for volcanic activity and maintenance, and closures are posted in advance when possible.
  • Include the Botos Lagoon trail on your visit; it's a short separate walk that most visitors miss while stopping only at the main crater viewpoint.
