Piedras Negras is a major Classic Maya archaeological site in Guatemala’s Petén Department located on the banks of the Usumacinta River. The site is known for its acropolis, carved stelae and inscriptions that document its dynastic history.

Visitors and researchers encounter monumental plazas, pyramidal structures and a ballcourt, together with finely carved stelae bearing calendrical and genealogical inscriptions. The city’s monuments and layout indicate its role as a political and ceremonial center during the Classic period.

Piedras Negras flourished principally during the Classic Maya era, approximately the 5th through 9th centuries AD, and maintained regional influence within the Usumacinta river system.
