Toniná Archaeological Site

ToninE1 is an archaeological Maya site in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, known for its steep terraces, monumental architecture and prolific carved stonework. It was an important regional capital during the Classic period of Maya civilization.

The site includes a large acropolis with terraces and stairways, a ballcourt, plazas and many carved monuments and hieroglyphic texts. Visitors explore terraces and sculptures that document political history and rituals.

ToninE1 rose to prominence during the Classic Maya era and was occupied across several centuries, with many monuments dated to the Late Classic period. Its inscriptions and reliefs provide information on local rulers and regional conflicts.

Located in the Chiapas highlands near the modern town of Ocosingo, the site sits on a hillside and is reached by road from nearby regional centers in southeastern Mexico.

Toniná archaeological site is reached by road from the nearby town of Ocosingo in Chiapas. The site is about 11 km from Ocosingo and is commonly accessed by taxi or local colectivo from that town; visitors coming from Palenque or other regional centres travel to Ocosingo first and then continue by road to Toniná.

• Arrive as the site opens to climb the steep pyramid stairway before the heat and to enjoy unobstructed views from the summit over the Chiapas highlands.
• Don't miss the on-site museum and sculptural panels - Toniná's reliefs and inscriptions are among the most detailed in the region and often receive less attention than the climb.
• Plan extra time to walk around the multiple plazas and stairways; Toniná's layout rewards a slower pace so you can spot carved stucco, ballcourt markers and tomb chambers that many visitors skim past.
