Built over the site of Florence’s Roman forum, the square was substantially reworked during the city’s late 19th-century redevelopment when Florence briefly served as Italy’s capital. The present layout and many of the surrounding buildings date to that period.

Situated in Florence’s historic centre, Piazza della Repubblica sits between the Duomo complex and the Mercato Centrale, within easy walking distance of the cathedral and main museums.

If driving into the city follow the A1 toward Florence and then the ring roads; parking is generally outside the ZTL with a short walk into the square.
