About Orsanmichele#
Orsanmichele in Florence is a medieval building originally constructed as a grain market and later converted into a church and shrine for the city’s craft guilds. The structure is notable for its blend of civic, commercial and religious functions and its rich sculptural program.
The façade features a sequence of external niches that were each assigned to a different guild; these niches contain statues by principal Renaissance sculptors dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The interior preserves Gothic architecture and spaces that reflect both its market origins and later ecclesiastical use.
Over centuries the building evolved from a utilitarian market hall into a prestigious civic-religious monument commissioned and maintained by Florence’s guilds. Conservation and museum displays within the building complement the still-visible historical fabric.
Situated in central Florence, Orsanmichele sits between major landmarks such as the Duomo and the Piazza della Signoria, making it an accessible stop on historic city tours.
- Original function: Originally built in the 14th century as a grain market, the building was adapted over time into a church and guild chapel complex.
- Notable artworks: The exterior niches hold sculptures by artists such as Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio, created during the 14th and 15th centuries on commissions by Florence’s guilds.
What to See#
- External sculptural niches: A series of 14 external niches on the façade each originally commissioned by Florence’s trade and craft guilds to display marble and bronze statues by leading 14th-15th century sculptors.
- Interior church and hall: Interior chapel and upper grain-hall levels that were converted from the original market hall into a church and civic space, retaining Gothic structural elements and painted interiors.
