The façade features a sequence of external niches that were each assigned to a different guild; these niches contain statues by principal Renaissance sculptors dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The interior preserves Gothic architecture and spaces that reflect both its market origins and later ecclesiastical use.

Over centuries the building evolved from a utilitarian market hall into a prestigious civic-religious monument commissioned and maintained by Florence’s guilds. Conservation and museum displays within the building complement the still-visible historical fabric.

Orsanmichele is in central Florence, close to the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. From Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) train station it’s an easy 10-15 minute walk (about 800-1,000 m) east through Via Panzani/Via Roma into the historic centre. The site is also served by local ATAF buses; if driving, follow signs to the historic centre and use nearby public parking, then walk into the pedestrian area.

• Visit as early as possible to see the exterior sculptural niches without the crowds that fill central Florence later in the day.
• Go inside the building to see the museum space where many of the original niche statues and important sculptural works have been moved for preservation-most visitors only notice the replicas on the exterior.
• Combine a short visit here with a quiet walk through the surrounding artisan streets (you're close to the former grain market) to avoid the heaviest tourist flows around the Duomo.
