Piazza del Duomo is the principal public square at the heart of Milan in Lombardy, dominated by the cathedral and flanked by major civic and commercial buildings. It functions as the city’s main ceremonial and tourist hub.

The square is centered on the Duomo di Milano, whose exterior and roof terraces draw large numbers of visitors for architecture and views. On the piazza’s flank the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II provides a 19th-century glass-roofed shopping arcade with cafes, boutiques and historic ornamentation.

Surrounding buildings include exhibition venues and museums that face the piazza, and the area is busy with street life, events and transit connections.

The piazza formed around the construction of Milan’s cathedral, which began in the late 14th century, and later urban developments sorted the surrounding civic and commercial buildings into the present square. The site has long been Milan’s focal point for public events and cultural life.

Located in central Milan, the square sits between major pedestrian streets and is directly fronted by the Duomo metro station, making it easily accessible on foot from other central landmarks.

Piazza del Duomo is in the historic centre of Milan. The easiest public-transit access is the Metro: take M1 (red line) or M3 (yellow line) to the Duomo station; the piazza is an immediate exit from the station (a 1-3 minute walk to the cathedral and square). Several city streets meet the square (Via Torino, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II), and from Milano Centrale railway station it is about 3 km by road (roughly 10-20 minutes by taxi depending on traffic).
