Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan and one of Europe’s largest Gothic cathedrals. Construction started in 1386 and the building is noted for its extensive use of pinnacles, spires and statuary.

Visitors commonly go to the interior to see the vaulted nave and stained glass, and to the rooftop terraces to walk among elaborate spires and sculptures and to view the city. The cathedral is topped by the gilded Madonnina statue on its highest spire.

Work on the cathedral spanned late medieval, Renaissance and modern periods, with the façade and finishing touches completed in phases through the 19th century. The site has been a focal point of Milanese civic and religious life for centuries.

Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) sits on Piazza del Duomo in central Milan. Take the Milan Metro to Duomo station (M1 red line or M3 yellow line) and exit directly onto the square; from Milano Centrale station you can reach Duomo by Metro (M3) or a 20-25 minute walk. The cathedral is pedestrianised and immediately accessible from surrounding streets (Via Dante, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II).

• Arrive at the Duomo early (right at opening) or late afternoon to avoid the largest tour‑group rush in Piazza del Duomo and to get better light for photos of the façade.
• Buy rooftop access tickets in advance and use the dedicated terraces/lift entrance for the terraces (separate from the main cathedral entry) to save time and secure a spot on the roof at your preferred hour.
