Phu Ruea National Park

National Park Mountain park with cool climate and scenic viewpoints

A highland national park in northeastern Thailand with a cool plateau, pine stands, marked trails and sunrise viewpoints on the Phu Ruea ridge.

Phu Ruea National Park centers on the steep, forested massif of Phu Ruea in northern Thailand and is known for its high-elevation viewpoints and cooler climate. The park’s highest point, Phu Ruea peak, rises to about 1,365 meters above sea level.

Trails, viewpoints and several short drives lead to panoramic outlooks used for sunrise and sunset viewing; the park also contains mixed evergreen and pine forest typical of higher elevations in this region. Visitors often go for short hikes, ridge-top scenery and seasonal flower displays.

The area was designated for protection to preserve its upland ecosystems and scenic highland landscape; over time facilities for visitors such as trails and viewpoints have been developed to accommodate tourism while conserving forested slopes.

Located in Loei Province in northeastern Thailand, the park sits near the district that shares its name and occupies a high plateau close to the border with neighboring provinces. The surrounding landscape is hilly and upland, with the nearest significant town being the province center, Loei.

  • Best season: Cooler temperatures and clear skies between November and February make this the most popular time for hiking and viewpoints.

How to Get to Phu Ruea National Park #

Phu Ruea National Park is in Loei province (Phu Ruea district). The usual way to reach it is by road from the city of Loei: follow the main provincial roads toward Phu Ruea (roughly 40-50 km from Loei town by car) and then follow local signs up into the park. Local buses or songthaews run regionally toward Phu Ruea district from Loei bus terminal; on arrival the park facilities are a short drive/walk from the district town.

Tips for Visiting Phu Ruea National Park #

  • Head to Phu Ruea at dawn in the cool season (roughly November-February) - the summit viewpoint is best for sunrise and the morning sea‑of‑mist that many visitors come for.
  • Enter the park from the Phu Ruea town/park office; the park road brings you close to the main viewpoint and short marked trails, so plan your route with the office to make the most of limited daylight.
  • Instead of only visiting the main viewpoint, take one of the short summit trails around the park - they tend to be quieter and often show local high‑altitude plants and clearer long‑distance views once the sun is up.
