Northern Coast (Tumbes & Piura)
December returns the smell of sea salt and the first sustained tropical downpours - particularly in El Niño-prone years - along with very hot afternoons on the sand. Holiday crowds grow near Mancora and Zorritos, so book accommodation early. For birders and anglers it’s an active month, but road closures are more likely if heavy rains set in.
Central Coast & Lima (Lima, Paracas, Ica)
December is typically warm and bright along Ica, Paracas and increasingly sunny in Lima; beaches welcome locals and international visitors alike. High-season restaurant bookings and weekend crowds grow, especially over the Christmas holidays. For city travelers, mornings can still hold a trace of coastal mist, so carry a light layer for early walks on the Malecon.
Southern Coast & Nazca Plateau (Nasca, Arequipa lowlands)
December returns to a reliably hot and dry pattern on the plates and plains, with sunny days that are excellent for Nazca flights and desert excursions; Arequipa feels warm but comfortable thanks to altitude. Holiday travel picks up domestically around the city, so expect busier services and booked tours. Sunscreen, wide-brim hats and plenty of water remain non-negotiable.
Northern & Central Highlands (Huaraz, Cajamarca, Ancash)
December is squarely in the wet season again: expect regular afternoon convective storms and the possibility of road disruptions from landslides, especially in the Ancash and Cajamarca zones. Waterfalls and puna grasslands are lush and vivid, however, so photography and cultural visits are rewarding if you come prepared for rain and muddy trails. Always check river crossing conditions before venturing off main roads.
Cusco & Southern Highlands (Cusco, Sacred Valley, Puno, Colca)
December is wet and warm in the southern highlands, with tropical storms possible on heavier rain days; Machu Picchu can be misty and atmospheric with fewer tourists but also more unpredictable access. Festive preparations in towns like Cusco and Puno make for vibrant local culture, though heavy rains can interrupt trains and roads. Bring waterproof bags for equipment and expect a slower travel pace.
Amazon Basin (Loreto, Madre de Dios & Manu)
December is squarely in the rainy season throughout much of the Amazon: torrential rains, rising rivers and pervasive humidity define days, making canoe travel the safest and most common mobility option. For wildlife enthusiasts, this is a peak time for fish-eating birds and amphibian activity, but mosquitoes and leeches will be numerous. Pack heavy-duty rain protection, insect repellent and accept slower travel paces into and around reserves.
