Paro Taktsang
Religious Site Clifftop Bhutanese monastery known as Tiger's Nest
Perched on a cliff above Paro valley, Paro Taktsang monastery requires a steep hike; pilgrims and tourists visit for the cliffside temple complex, Himalayan views and Bhutanese Buddhist rituals.
Paro Taktsang, commonly called Tiger’s Nest, is a cliffside Buddhist monastery in Paro District, Bhutan, perched on a granite cliff and completed as a complex in the late 17th century. It is one of Bhutan’s most iconic pilgrimage sites and spiritual landmarks.
The site consists of temple buildings and retreat caves built into a sheer rock face roughly 900 m above the Paro valley and at an elevation around 3,120 m. Tight staircases, courtyards and painted chapels are concentrated on a narrow ledge, and the walk up from the parking area typically takes two to three hours for most visitors.
Local tradition says Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated in the caves in the 8th century and the monastery complex was founded in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye. The site has been subject to restorations after fires and continues to function as a religious retreat and pilgrimage destination.
The monastery sits about 10 km by road from Paro town on a steep forested slope above the Paro valley. The trailhead is reached by a short drive from the main Paro road, and clear weather provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valley.
- Access and elevation: The monastery sits at about 3,120 m above sea level and is typically a 2-3 hour steep hike from the roadhead; horses are available for part of the ascent but are not always suitable on the final steep sections.
- Visitor etiquette: Photography and respectful dress are required; interior spaces are active religious sites and visitors should follow local rules such as removing hats and shoes where requested.
What to See #
- Main temple complex: A cliffside complex of temples and monastery buildings built into rock ledges, reached by a steep trail and steps from the Paro valley; the complex rises approximately 900 m above the valley floor.
- Guru Rinpoche's cave (Taktsang): A cave associated with Guru Rinpoche where he is said to have meditated; the cave is the spiritual heart of the site and is incorporated into the monastery's chapels.
How to Get to Paro Taktsang #
Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) sits on a cliff above Paro Valley. Most visitors fly into Paro Airport and drive to Paro town (the airport is about a 20-30 minute drive from town), then continue by road to the Taktsang trailhead (roughly a 15-30 minute drive from Paro town depending on exact drop‑off).
From the trailhead access is on foot only: the hike to the monastery is steep and typically takes about 1.5-2 hours each way for fit walkers; bring good footwear and allow time for the return descent.
Tips for Visiting Paro Taktsang #
- Start the Paro Taktsang hike early-departing before 7:00 a.m. puts you ahead of the main tour-group surge and often avoids the clouds that build later in the day, giving the best cliff-top views.
- Access the trail from the designated Taktsang parking area above Paro town and hire the hike through your licensed Bhutan tour operator who will handle monastery access rules and permits; independent access is not permitted.
- Respect monastery rules: photography is commonly restricted inside temples and visitors must follow monastic protocols (handled by your guide), so budget time for the viewpoints and external photography rather than expecting long interior access.
