Parícutin is a monogenetic cinder cone in Michoacán that famously emerged in a farmer’s field in 1943 and became one of the best-documented volcanic births of the 20th century. The cone towers several hundred meters above the local plain and is accessible to visitors.

The most striking sights are the dark volcanic cone itself and the partially buried ruins of the church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, whose upper tower protrudes from lava and ash. Guided hikes and horseback trips from nearby villages such as Angahuan lead to viewpoints around the cone and to trails that cross hardened lava fields.

The volcano began erupting on February 20, 1943, growing quickly as ash and lava buried nearby farmland and several villages; eruptive activity persisted through 1952. The eruption and burial of settlements were widely documented by volcanologists and photographers, and the site became a subject of scientific study and tourism.

Parícutin is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in Michoacán, within rural highlands west of Morelia. The cone is reached by local roads from nearby towns and village trailheads used by tour operators.

  • Eruption dates: Eruption began in a cornfield on February 20, 1943, and the cone grew rapidly over the ensuing years before eruptive activity largely ceased in 1952.
  • Cone height and ruins: The cone rises roughly 424 meters above the surrounding landscape; the remnants of the nearby village church are commonly visited and photographed.
