Lake Chapala is the largest freshwater lake in Mexico, straddling the states of Jalisco and Michoacán. It is an important regional water body and cultural centre with several lakeside towns and villages.

The lakeshore offers promenades, fishing piers and small marinas, with towns such as Chapala and Ajijic providing restaurants, galleries and seasonal markets. The surrounding lakeside and wetlands are frequented by birdwatchers and recreational anglers, and boat trips around the bay are common.

The lake has long been important to local communities for fishing and transport and has been affected by 20th and 21st century water use and urban pressure from nearby Guadalajara. Conservation and water management efforts have been focal points for regional planners in recent decades.

Lake Chapala lies in west-central Mexico, roughly south of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, with Jalisco towns and villages lining its shores and low hills rising around parts of the basin.

• Chapala: Chapala town sits on the lake’s northwest shore and is a transport and tourist hub with a lakeside malecón and ferry connections across the bay.

Lake Chapala is on the Jalisco-Michoacán border, with the well-known town of Chapala and Ajijic on its northern shore about an hour’s drive south of Guadalajara. From Guadalajara there are frequent intercity buses and colectivo vans to Chapala and Ajijic leaving from the city’s main bus terminals; driving takes roughly 45-75 minutes depending on traffic.

Once in the towns on the lake (Chapala, Ajijic), the lakeshore is easily reached on foot, by local taxi or by short local bus rides.

• Head to the malecon in Chapala or the Ajijic waterfront in late afternoon for the most popular sunsets and the liveliest lakeside atmosphere without the midday heat.
• Include Ajijic in your visit to see the town's artisan galleries and cafés; many visitors focus on Chapala town but miss Ajijic's lakeside promenade and arts scene a short walk away.
• For quieter visits, go on weekday mornings when the malecones and parks are less crowded and local birdlife is most active along the shore.
