How to Get to Panzhihua
Panzhihua is reachable by air via Panzhihua Bao'anying Airport and by conventional rail and coach services to Panzhihua Railway Station and the city's bus terminals. Many visitors also travel via the bigger hubs of Chengdu or Kunming and continue by train or long‑distance coach.
Panzhihua Bao’anying Airport (PZI): The airport lies outside the urban core and is the main air gateway for the city. Airport shuttle buses run to central Panzhihua and typically cost around 15-25 CNY with a journey time of about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis from the airport to the city centre generally take 25-40 minutes and cost roughly 60-80 CNY.
Chengdu / Kunming via connecting airports: Many travellers reach Panzhihua by flying into larger regional hubs (Chengdu Shuangliu CTU or Kunming Changshui KMG) and continuing by train or long-distance bus. Flight prices and onward travel times vary widely; expect a 2.5-4 hour rail or coach journey from those hubs to Panzhihua and additional local transport costs (see Train & Bus card).
Train: Panzhihua is served by Panzhihua Railway Station (攀枝花站) for conventional rail services that link the city with regional centres. Typical journey times: Chengdu by conventional train can take several hours (often 6-10+ hours depending on service); Kunming routes are shorter but vary by service. Fares depend on train type and class (hard seat/sleeper/soft sleeper) - expect a wide range (roughly 100-300+ CNY for typical intercity journeys).
Long‑distance bus: The city has long‑distance coach services from the main long‑distance bus stations to nearby cities (Chengdu, Kunming, Xichang and regional towns). Journey times depend on route (several hours) and fares commonly range from about 70-180 CNY depending on distance and coach grade. Within the city, local public buses connect neighbourhoods and are the cheapest option (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Panzhihua
Panzhihua is easiest to navigate by taxi or Didi for convenience; local buses are the cheapest and cover most areas but are slower. For intercity travel, conventional trains and long‑distance coaches are the main options - use Chengdu or Kunming as hubs if you need more frequent services.
- Taxis & Didi (10-80 CNY) - Taxis and app-based ride-hailing (Didi) are the most convenient way to get around Panzhihua, especially if you're carrying luggage or travelling off-peak. A typical short inner-city trip costs modestly more than local buses but is quicker and door-to-door; airport rides usually cost about 60-80 CNY. Expect drivers to prefer cash or mobile payment.
- Long‑distance coaches (70-180 CNY) - Long‑distance buses connect Panzhihua with regional centres (Chengdu, Kunming, Xichang and nearby towns). Coaches depart from the city's main long‑distance bus stations several times daily; journeys typically take several hours and fares usually range from ~70-180 CNY depending on distance and coach class. Book in advance during holiday periods.
- Conventional trains (100-300+ CNY) - Panzhihua Railway Station serves conventional (non-high-speed) trains linking the city to provincial networks. Trains are useful for overnight travel and heavy luggage; travel times and fares vary widely by route and seat/sleeper class. Check schedules in advance, as services are less frequent than on major high-speed corridors.
- Local public buses (1-3 CNY) - City buses are the cheapest way to move around Panzhihua and cover most neighbourhoods and suburban routes. Fares are low (typically the lowest-cost option) but services can be slow and stops may not be well-signed for non-Chinese speakers. Carry small change or use mobile payment where possible.
- Car hire / self-drive (200-500 CNY/day) - Renting a car offers flexibility for exploring nearby scenic areas and industrial outskirts, but urban traffic and parking can be awkward. A local or national rental company requires a valid Chinese driving licence or an accepted international permit; fuel and parking add to costs. Consider this only if you're comfortable driving in regional China.
- Walking - The city centre and riverfront areas are compact enough for walking and that's often the best way to explore markets, restaurants and short neighbourhood hops. Sidewalk quality varies, so wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time in hot weather. Walking is free and often faster than connecting buses for very short trips.
