Xichang Travel Guide
City City in Sichuan province, China
Satellite launches put Xichang on maps, but travelers linger for Qionghai Lake, Yi festivals, hot springs, and spicy Sichuan dishes served in lakeside eateries.
Why Visit Xichang? #
Perched in Sichuan’s Liangshan prefecture, Xichang draws attention for its lakeside setting, ethnic Yi culture and an unexpected high-tech presence in the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. Qionghai Lake and nearby hills host outdoor activities while the Yi Torch Festival provides a vivid cultural highlight with dance, music and ritual. Food reflects the region’s bold flavors-local smoked meats and pepper-forward hotpots-so the city is rewarding for both cultural immersion and adventurous eating.
Who's Xichang For?
Xichang sits beside Qionghai Lake and mountain scenery, making it a strong base for lakeside walks and island boat trips. Local parks and lakeshore promenades are easy to reach from the city center for relaxed outdoor days.
Hikers and paddlers will find routes around Qionghai and nearby peaks; multi-day trekking and mountain biking are possible with local guides. The launch center area adds unusual weekday morning views when rockets/launch activities occur.
Sichuan spices meet Yi minority specialties in Xichang’s markets and eateries. Try spicy hotpots and local river fish dishes in downtown restaurants. Street stalls and lakeside cafes offer affordable meals and strong regional flavours.
Xichang appeals to budget travelers exploring southwestern Sichuan and the Liangshan area. Cheap guesthouses cluster near the train station and Qionghai; buses and boats make island hopping and market visits easy on a small daily budget.

How to Get to Xichang
Xichang is served directly by Xichang Qingshan Airport (XIC) and by rail at Xichang North and Xichang Railway Station. For most visitors the fastest regional option is the high-speed rail to Xichang North or a flight into XIC, while intercity coaches link surrounding cities.
Xichang Qingshan Airport (XIC): Xichang Qingshan Airport is the city’s main airport with domestic flights to Chengdu, Kunming and larger hubs. From the airport to downtown Xichang, airport shuttle buses run for about ¥15-¥25 and take roughly 30-40 minutes; taxis cost about ¥60-¥90 and take 25-40 minutes depending on traffic. There is no metro - taxis, Didi and the airport bus are the usual onward options.
Train: Xichang North (西昌北) is the high-speed station on the Chengdu-Kunming corridor; high-speed services from Chengdu typically take about 3-4 hours with second-class fares commonly in the ¥120-¥220 range. The older Xichang Railway Station (西昌站) handles slower conventional trains and overnight services (hard/soft sleepers) to nearby provinces; journey times and fares vary by service and class.
Bus: Long-distance coaches run from the main coach terminal (commonly called Xichang Passenger Transport Center / 西昌客运中心 or local long-distance bus stations) to Chengdu, Kunming and regional towns; typical journey times are 6-10 hours and fares usually range from about ¥60-¥180 depending on route and coach class. Within the city, regular public buses are very cheap (around ¥1-¥2) and cover most neighbourhoods; taxis and Didi are readily available for shorter trips.
How to Get Around Xichang
Xichang is best navigated with a mix of taxis/Didi for convenience and buses or bikes for budget travel. For intercity travel, use Xichang North high‑speed station for faster journeys; intercity coaches offer flexible alternatives. Walking works well inside the compact city centre.
- Taxi & Didi (¥8-¥40) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get around Xichang, with typical short rides costing ¥8-¥40 depending on distance; the meter start is usually around ¥8-¥10. Didi (China's dominant ride‑hail) operates in Xichang and is often easier for non‑Mandarin speakers because destinations can be entered in pinyin. Expect slightly higher fares at night or after airport arrivals.
- Public bus (¥1-¥2) - The city bus network covers central Xichang and nearby suburbs with frequent services and very low fares (around ¥1-¥2 per ride). Buses are the cheapest option but routes and signage can be confusing for first‑time visitors; carry small change or a local transit card if you plan to use them often. Buses are useful for reaching markets and main neighbourhoods but are slower than taxis.
- High‑speed rail (Xichang North) (¥120-¥220) - Xichang North (西昌北) serves high‑speed trains on the Chengdu-Kunming line and is the best option for regional travel to Chengdu, Kunming and other cities. Travel times to Chengdu are typically around 3-4 hours; second‑class tickets commonly fall in the ¥120-¥220 range. Station facilities are modern; book tickets in advance during holidays.
- Intercity coach (¥60-¥180) - Long‑distance coaches run from the Xichang passenger terminals to provincial capitals and neighbouring towns; they are often cheaper than trains and run more flexible schedules. Typical fares to major nearby cities range roughly ¥60-¥180 with journey times from several hours up to a day depending on distance. Coaches are practical if HSR schedules are inconvenient but can be less comfortable for long overnight trips.
- Bicycle & e‑bike (¥1-¥2) - Dockless bikes and e‑bikes are commonly available around the city for short trips and errands; short rides often cost around ¥1-¥2 for the first 30 minutes. They are handy for flat central areas and short sightseeing hops but watch for busy roads and local traffic patterns. Helmets are not always provided, so exercise caution.
- Walking - Central Xichang is compact enough to explore on foot for markets, lakeside areas and neighbourhood streets; walking is often the fastest way to move short distances in the core. Footpaths can vary in quality outside the main tourist areas, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for occasional uphill sections.
