About Panionium#
The Panionium was the sacred meeting place and sanctuary of the Ionian League in ancient Ionia, located on the coast of what is now Aydın Province in western Turkey. It functioned as the site for league assemblies and religious festivals.
The locale included a sanctuary and open-air assembly area used by the Ionian city-states for confederate meetings and ritual activities. The site was closely associated with the coastal landscape and views across the Aegean.
Over time the Panionium’s political importance declined with changing regional powers, but its role as a federative and cultic centre characterizes its significance in archaic and classical Greek history.
