Palazzo Rucellai Palace

Palazzo Rucellai is a 15th-century urban palace in the historic centre of Florence, Tuscany, built for the wealthy Rucellai family and generally dated to the mid-1400s. The palace’s articulated façade, using pilasters and a tripartite horizontal division, is an important early Renaissance design often attributed to Leon Battista Alberti.

Exterior features include three storeys of ordered masonry with classical motifs adapted for a domestic palazzo; the interior contains a courtyard and family residential spaces arranged around it. The building exemplifies the application of learned classical architecture to private urban commissions in Renaissance Florence.

Commissioned by the Rucellai family in the mid-15th century, the palace has been studied for its architectural innovation and influence on later palaces in Italy. Its façade and proportions are frequently cited in architectural histories of the period.

The palazzo sits within Florence’s historic centre, among other Renaissance-era palaces and close to the city’s principal cultural and civic landmarks.

Palazzo Rucellai sits in the historic centre of Florence on Via della Vigna Nuova. From Firenze Santa Maria Novella (the main train station) it is about a 10-15 minute walk (roughly 800-1,200 m) across the city centre; follow the pedestrian streets toward Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Via de’ Tornabuoni to reach the palace.

If driving, the palace is in central Florence (limited traffic zone applies). From Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci) the city centre is about 6 km by road and typically a 20-30 minute taxi or rideshare drive depending on traffic.

• Visit first thing in the morning on a weekday to photograph Alberti's façade on Via della Vigna Nuova with far fewer tourists and softer light.
• Approach from the Santa Maria Novella side - the palazzo's exterior details are best appreciated from the pavement facing the street; interior access is limited so plan on studying the façade closely.
• Don't rush past the entablature and pilaster patterns: many visitors miss the careful use of classical orders and the rhythm of stone courses that make the building a key early Renaissance work.
