The palazzo is primarily appreciated for its exterior - the decorated windows and canal elevation are frequently photographed from passing boats and from the Accademia bridge. Public interior access is limited, so the typical visit focuses on canal-side views and nearby museums.

Constructed in the 15th century for the Contarini family, the building has seen residential and private uses over the centuries while retaining its prominent canal location. Architectural features reflect the transitional Gothic-to-Renaissance style of Venetian palaces.

From Santa Lucia station take vaporetto line 1 along the Grand Canal to Accademia (about 10-15 minutes). Cars are not used in the historic island - the nearest parking is at Piazzale Roma.
