About Osborne House#
Osborne House is a former royal residence on the Isle of Wight built for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the mid-19th century and designed in an Italianate style for use as a family home and seaside retreat. The estate combines formal state rooms with private apartments and domestic outbuildings.
The property includes the main house with state and private rooms, the Swiss Cottage built as a model cottage for royal children, and extensive gardens and shoreline that were used for recreation and domestic demonstration. Many original furnishings and decorative schemes survive and are presented to the public.
Osborne House is located on the eastern shore of the Isle of Wight overlooking the Solent, near the town of East Cowes, and is administered as a heritage property open to visitors.
