Omo National Park

Omo National Park is a protected area in southwestern Ethiopia encompassing part of the lower Omo River valley and surrounding habitats. The park preserves a mixture of woodland, grassland and riverine environments and lies within a region of high cultural and biological diversity.

The area is noted for the presence of several ethnic groups with distinct traditional ways of life, and for wildlife such as elephants, buffalo and various antelope species where habitat remains intact. The broader Omo Valley is also internationally important for palaeoanthropological discoveries made in the 20th century.

The park was created to protect both wildlife and cultural landscapes and has been subject to conservation and land-management challenges over time. Access is limited by remoteness and infrastructure; visits typically require planning and local arrangements.

Omo National Park sits in southern Ethiopia along the lower reaches of the Omo River, in the administrative region listed as the South West Ethiopia Peoples’ Region, and is reached by road from regional towns such as Jinka and Turmi.
