Old Town Market Square (Rynek Starego Miasta) is the central plaza of Warsaw’s Old Town in Poland, framed by reconstructed historic townhouses, restaurants and small museums. It functions as the social and tourist heart of the historic district.

The square today hosts outdoor cafes, seasonal markets and street performers, and is a focal point for walking tours of the Old Town. Its compact cobbled layout and painted façades are characteristic features visitors photograph and explore.

The market square has medieval origins as the commercial centre of Warsaw’s Old Town, but it was heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently rebuilt as part of a comprehensive postwar restoration of the district.

The square sits within Warsaw’s Old Town, adjacent to the Royal Castle and Castle Square in central Warsaw, and is easily reached on foot from the main city centre transport hubs.

The Old Town Market Square is in central Warsaw’s Stare Miasto (Old Town). From Warszawa Centralna (central train station) it is a 20-25 minute walk or a short tram ride (tram lines 4, 10 or 18 to the Old Town stop). Metro: from Centrum take tram or a 15-20 minute walk northeast. Most city buses and trams have stops within easy walking distance.

• Visit just before 9am to see the square emptied of tour groups and vendors, when the buildings glow and the soundscape is mostly pigeons.
• Explore the narrow lanes radiating from the square - museums and tiny cafés are often less crowded than the ring of restaurants on the square itself.
• Look for the brick and plaster patchwork on façades: the meticulous post‑war reconstruction used archival paintings and 18th-century prints to recreate pre-war appearances.
