Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) is the principal public plaza immediately in front of the Royal Castle in Warsaw’s Old Town, Masovian Voivodeship. It is a central civic and ceremonial space in Poland’s capital.

The square is dominated by the tall Sigismund’s Column and the façades of the Royal Castle, with open paved space used for gatherings, markets and ceremonies. The square is a primary arrival point for visitors to the Old Town and a focal point for guided tours and public photography.

Historically the heart of Warsaw’s royal and civic life, the square and surrounding structures were heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in a large postwar restoration project to recreate their prewar appearance. The reconstructed Royal Castle now houses museum collections and state rooms.

Situated at the eastern end of Warsaw’s Royal Route, the square opens onto the historic Old Town and connects to Krakowskie Przedmieście and the broader central districts by pedestrian streets.

• Setting: The square is the ceremonial gateway between the Royal Castle and the main historic boulevard of Krakowskie Przedmieście, often used for public events.
• Reconstruction: Most buildings around the square were reconstructed after wartime destruction and restoration work post-1945 recreated the historic urban form.

What to See#

• Sigismund’s Column: A 17th-century bronze column topped by a statue of King Sigismund III Vasa, erected as a royal monument and re-erected after wartime destruction.
• Royal Castle: The Royal Castle, whose rebuilt façades face the square and serve as a museum and historic seat of state ceremonial functions.

Castle Square is a five-minute walk from the Old Town metro station (Ratusz-Arsenał on Metro Line M1) or a short tram ride to the stop ‘Stare Miasto’. From Warszawa Centralna train station it is a 20-25 minute walk or 10 minutes by tram (routes 4, 13).

• Arrive before 9:00am to see the square emptied of vendors and buses for the best photos of Sigismund's Column.
• Walk the short slope up to the Royal Castle for a different perspective-many visitors miss the worn patina on the north-facing steps.
• If visiting the Royal Castle, book tickets online to avoid long queues in high season.
