Old Quebec
Building Walled historic district and UNESCO World Heritage site
Quebec City’s Old Quebec preserves cobblestone streets, 17th-19th-century fortifications and Château Frontenac towering over the St. Lawrence. Tourists come for historic architecture, French-language cafés, museums and seasonal festivals.
Old Quebec is the historic core of Quebec City on a promontory above the St. Lawrence River, with origins dating to the early 17th century and a UNESCO World Heritage designation from 1985. It is one of the best-preserved fortified colonial cities in North America.
The district divides into Upper Town with ramparts, government buildings and the iconic Château Frontenac, and Lower Town with narrow streets, shops and riverfront quays. Historic sites, museums, guided walks and seasonal festivals draw visitors year round.
Founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 and developed over centuries as a colonial and military centre, Old Quebec retains fortifications, military structures and urban fabric from the French and British eras. Its preservation and restoration through the 19th and 20th centuries secured its UNESCO listing.
Situated in the heart of Quebec City on a river-facing promontory, Old Quebec is immediately adjacent to the modern downtown and easily reached on foot or by short transit rides.
- UNESCO designation: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its well-preserved fortifications and historic urban fabric.
- Funicular connection: A funicular links Upper and Lower Town, providing quick access between the riverfront and the historic ramparts above.
What to See #
- Upper Town (Haute-Ville): La Haute-Ville, the Upper Town, containing historic fortified ramparts, administrative buildings and the Château Frontenac hotel overlooking the river.
- Lower Town (Basse-Ville): La Basse-Ville, the Lower Town, with narrow streets, shops and the Petit-Champlain district along the riverfront.
- Plains of Abraham: The Plains of Abraham and surrounding historic battlefields and green spaces used for public events and museums.
- The Citadel: The Citadel, an active military base and museum atop the promontory that offers guided tours and ceremonial events.
