Best Time to Visit Ohrid#
Ohrid is at its best from late spring through early autumn when the lake warms and beaches, boat trips and sites are enjoyable. Winters are chilly and much quieter, with reduced tourist services.

How to Get to Ohrid#
Ohrid is best reached by plane into Ohrid Airport (seasonal connections) or by intercity bus from Skopje and neighbouring countries. The town is compact; taxis and local buses cover the short transfer from the airport and station.
Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle (OHD): Ohrid has its own airport with seasonal and year-round services to several European cities. From the airport the city centre is about 10-15 minutes by taxi; expect roughly 300-700 MKD (about €5-12) depending on time and luggage.
Skopje International (SKP): Many international flights arrive into Skopje. From Skopje you can take a direct bus to Ohrid from Skopje Bus Station; journey time is about 3.5-4.5 hours and fares are typically 300-700 MKD (€5-12).
Train: There is currently no regular passenger rail service directly to Ohrid; the national rail network does not serve the city for most passenger routes, so trains are not a practical arrival option.
Bus: Ohrid’s central bus station (Автобуска станица Охрид) has regular connections to Skopje, Bitola, Tirana and other regional destinations. Buses are frequent to Skopje and Bitola; expect comfortable intercity coaches, tickets usually purchased at the station or online, journey times and fares vary by route (Skopje ~3.5-4.5 h, 300-700 MKD).
How to Get Around Ohrid#
Use direct flights into Ohrid when available for the quickest access; otherwise travel by intercity bus from Skopje or regional hubs. Inside Ohrid the compact lakeside centre is best explored on foot, with taxis for late-night or luggage-heavy trips.
- Domestic flights (Varies widely (seasonal)) - Ohrid airport handles seasonal international and domestic flights; flying in is fastest, with a short taxi/transfer into town. Flight schedules vary by season-check carriers and book early in summer.
- Intercity bus (300-700 MKD) - Buses are the main overland option. The central bus station connects Ohrid with Skopje (3.5-4.5 h), Bitola and Tirana. Coaches are frequent, inexpensive and reliable; buy tickets at the station or from operator websites.
- Taxi (300-800 MKD) - Taxis are commonly used for airport transfers and short trips around Ohrid. Negotiate or use the meter; airport-to-centre trips typically cost a few hundred MKD. Prebooked transfers are available in peak season.
- Boat / lake taxi (Variable) - On Lake Ohrid short boat trips and lake taxis run in high season connecting lakeside villages and beaches. Prices depend on route and whether it’s a private charter; shared services are cheapest and useful for sightseeing.
- Walking - Ohrid’s old town, lakeside promenade and archaeological sites are best experienced on foot. Streets can be steep and uneven; comfortable shoes are recommended.

Shopping in Ohrid#
Ohrid is known for its Ohrid-style pearls and small silver and woodcrafts; you’ll find these around the Old Bazaar and along the lakeside. Small shops and artisan stalls cluster in the pedestrian streets of the old town. Markets and lakeside vendors are busiest in summer; for larger purchases or modern stores try the newer parts of town near the main boulevard.
Nightlife in Ohrid#
Ohrid’s nightlife is seasonal and livelier in summer when lakeside bars, beach cafés and boat parties run into the evening. Outside peak season the town is much quieter, with most evening activity centred on restaurants and a handful of bars.
