Ocean Park Hong Kong
Park Marine-themed amusement park with aquarium and rides
Perched on Hong Kong Island’s southern shore, Ocean Park combines roller coasters, marine aquariums, a cable-car across steep cliffs and seasonal animal exhibits-popular for family-friendly rides, ocean viewpoints and educational displays.
Ocean Park Hong Kong is a marine-themed amusement park on the southern slopes of Hong Kong Island that opened in 1977. It combines aquarium exhibits, animal displays and theme-park rides across a hillside site.
The park is laid out in two main areas - the lower Waterfront and the higher Summit - linked by a scenic cable car and the Ocean Express funicular. Attractions include roller coasters and family rides, marine and aquarium displays, animal conservation exhibits and live shows; the layout requires uphill walking or use of the internal transport links.
Ocean Park was established in the 1970s as a public attraction combining education and entertainment, and it has been developed and expanded over decades to add new rides and exhibits. Over time the park has introduced larger aquarium facilities and modernized transport links between the two main zones.
The park sits in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island between Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen, with access by road and by MTR plus shuttle services; it occupies a steep coastal hillside above the South China Sea.
- Getting around: The park covers a large hillside site on Hong Kong Island with two distinct zones connected by a cable car and the Ocean Express funicular, making significant walking and elevation changes part of a visit.
- When to visit: Shows and animal-feed times can help structure a visit; mornings and weekday afternoons tend to be less crowded than weekends and public holidays.
What to See #
- Waterfront: Lower park area with family rides, the aquarium exhibits and entry facilities; often where shows and marine displays are scheduled.
- Summit: Upper park area focused on thrill rides and animal exhibits, connected to the Waterfront by a cable car and the Ocean Express funicular.
- Grand Aquarium: Indoor marine exhibit housing tanks with a variety of fish, rays and sharks and other aquarium displays.
- Ocean Express: Underground funicular train that links the Waterfront and the Summit and operates as the park's internal transport system.
