Obelisk of Axum
Monument Ancient Ethiopian stele and Axum archaeological monument
The Obelisk of Axum, a 4th‑century Aksumite stele returned to Ethiopia in 2005, stands among other stelae and tombs. Visitors come for Aksumite archaeology and ancient monument complexes.
The Obelisk of Axum is a large ancient Aksumite stela located in the archaeological park at Axum in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region. It is one of the most prominent surviving stone monuments of the Aksumite Kingdom and is a UNESCO World Heritage site feature.
The obelisk stands in the Stelae Field alongside other carved tomb markers and archaeological remains, offering a clear view of Aksumite stone-carving and funerary architecture. The nearby museum displays additional finds and inscriptions from the site, providing context for the stelae and the Aksumite civilisation.
Carved in antiquity as part of the Aksumite tradition of monolithic stelae and tomb markers, the obelisk was removed to Italy during the 1930s Italian occupation and returned to Ethiopia in 2005; it was re-erected in Axum in 2008. The stelae served as markers for elite burials and as expressions of Aksumite architectural skill.
The monument is located in and around the town of Axum in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray Region, within the archaeological park that protects Aksum’s stelae field and associated remains.
- Height and material: The obelisk is one of the largest surviving Aksumite stelae at approximately 24 metres tall and was carved from a single block of local granite.
- Repatriation: Taken to Italy in 1937 during the Italian occupation and returned to Ethiopia in 2005; it was re-erected in Axum in 2008 as part of restoration and heritage efforts.
