The Nyika Plateau is a high, rolling upland in northern Malawi that forms the core of Nyika National Park and is noted for its montane grasslands and unique upland ecology. Elevations on the plateau reach roughly 2,600 metres, making it one of Malawi’s highest areas.

The landscape is dominated by open montane grassland, rounded hills, and isolated patches of montane forest; seasonal displays of alpine and subalpine flowers are a notable feature. Wildlife includes populations of antelopes and a variety of upland bird species, with roads and trails providing viewpoints across the plateau.

The plateau has long been recognized for its distinct ecology and was set aside for conservation as the Nyika protected area; development of visitor facilities concentrated around a few locations such as Chelinda to support wildlife viewing and hiking.

The Nyika Plateau occupies the highlands of northern Malawi, within the Northern Region, and lies inland from Lake Malawi and north of the city of Mzuzu. The plateau forms a broad elevated tableland extending across the region.

  • Chelinda access: Best-known access and accommodation point is at Chelinda, which provides the park headquarters, a lodge, and basic services for visitors exploring the plateau.
