Nyika National Park
Park Highland plateau park with rolling grasslands and wildlife
Nyika National Park’s high plateau in northern Malawi has rolling grasslands, montane forests and scenic hiking; visitors camp, spot antelope and endemic orchids, and drive the plateau’s winding trails.
Nyika National Park protects a high plateau in northern Malawi characterised by expansive montane grasslands, rolling hills and isolated rocky kopjes. The park is the country’s largest national park by area and is known for upland scenery and cooler climate.
Visitors come for walking, 4x4 routes and wildlife viewing in an open, high-altitude landscape where montane grasses and seasonal wildflowers dominate. Birdwatching and sightings of species adapted to higher elevations are common, and accommodation and visitor facilities are centred around the Chelinda area.
The plateau has been managed as a protected area since the mid-20th century and supports pastoral and conservation histories linked to colonial-era administration and later national park management. Landforms and ecology reflect the plateau’s geology and higher rainfall compared with surrounding lowlands.
Nyika lies in Malawi’s far north on a highland plateau that extends near the border with Zambia, reached by road from regional towns and offering long-distance views across undulating high ground.
- Elevation and habitat: The plateau reaches elevations around 2,600 metres, making it Malawi's highest extensive upland area with cooler temperatures and montane grassland habitat.
- Wildflowers and birdlife: The park is noted for wildflower displays, montane bird species and panoramic views across a highland landscape, accessed via a small network of roads and trails.
What to See #
- Chelinda area: Park headquarters and visitor facilities located at Chelinda with accommodation and access roads across the plateau.
- Nyika Plateau: High-altitude grasslands, rocky outcrops and montane heath that form the plateau's core, offering walking routes and highland views.
Tips for Visiting Nyika National Park #
- Nyika's high plateau is coolest and driest between May and October - that window provides the most reliable access, better walking conditions and clearer views across the montane grasslands.
- Base yourself at Chelinda (the park's main centre) or nearby camps to save long transfers each morning - Chelinda is the main hub for drives, walks and viewpoints on the plateau.
- If you're visiting in the wet season expect rough tracks and limited vehicle access; consider arranging a 4x4 or guided transfer and plan wildlife and birding activities for early morning when the highland species are most active.
