Nuri
Administrative Seat Ancient Kushite site with royal pyramids near Nuri
Nuri hosts a necropolis of Napatan-era pyramids north of the Nile’s Fourth Cataract; archaeologists and visitors examine steep-faced Kushite pyramids and tombs associated with ancient Nubian royalty.
Nuri is a Nubian archaeological site in Sudan’s Northern State that served as a royal cemetery for the Napatan period of the Kushite kingdom. The site is notable for its concentration of steep-sided Kushite pyramids and burial chambers.
The cemetery includes about twenty pyramids built for kings and high officials, with one of the largest pyramids at Nuri associated with the Kushite king Taharqa. Visitors go to see the pyramid remains, the exposed burial chambers, and the wider funerary landscape.
The cemetery was established in the first millennium BCE when Napatan rulers used Nuri as a royal necropolis. Archaeological work, notably in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, recorded burial contents and architectural details that tied the site to the Kushite state based at nearby Jebel Barkal.
Nuri sits on the east bank of the Nile in Northern State, a short distance north of the Jebel Barkal/Napatan area and the town of Karima. The site occupies a desert plain at the foot of the sandstone outcrops that characterize the region.
- Scale and purpose: Contains the Napatan royal necropolis used by Kushite kings and elites and includes roughly twenty pyramids and their burial complexes.
- Archaeology: Excavations by early 20th century archaeologists documented burials and grave goods and helped link the site to the Kushite kingdom centered at nearby Jebel Barkal.
What to See #
- Taharqa's pyramid: The large pyramid attributed to King Taharqa is the best-preserved and tallest monument at the site, forming a focal point of the necropolis.
- Royal cemetery: Clustered royal pyramids and associated burial chambers and tumuli that together form the royal cemetery of Napata.
