A 14th-century moated castle in Somerset, England, built for a landed medieval family and now surviving as a prominent ruined fortified manor house. Construction is generally dated to the 1370s.

Erected in the late 14th century by a local member of the gentry, the castle functioned as a fortified residence rather than a large royal fortress. It fell into ruin in later centuries; surviving fabric shows phases of medieval construction and later decay.

Sited beside the village after which it is named in rural south-west England, the castle sits within an agricultural landscape and is reached from nearby towns by minor roads.

• Viewing point: best views are obtained from the external bridge and the near bank of the moat where the silhouette of the gatehouse is visible
• Visitor note: there is no extensive modern visitor centre on site so expect a short on-site visit focused on the ruins and landscape
