Nuba Mountains

The Nuba Mountains are a range of rugged hills and plateaus in South Kordofan in central-southern Sudan, inhabited by numerous Nuba ethnic groups. They form an isolated upland landscape that contrasts with the surrounding plains.

The mountains have a long record of cultural diversity, traditional agriculture and distinctive village lifeways among the Nuba peoples. In modern times the region has also been the focus of political tensions and armed conflict, which has influenced settlement patterns and access.

Historically the area developed its own localized societies and practices distinct from lowland states; during the 20th and 21st centuries the Nuba Mountains have been affected by wider Sudanese political and military developments. The terrain and communities remain important for ethnographic and humanitarian study.

Geographically the range sits within South Kordofan state, with the town of Kadugli located on the eastern margin of the mountains; the landscape consists of rocky ridges, valleys and scattered farming settlements.
