Nordic Museum
Museum Cultural history museum documenting Nordic traditions and lifestyles
On Djurgården, the Nordic Museum documents Swedish cultural history with displays of folk costumes, Sami objects, furniture and seasonal traditions; visitors tour permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet) is Sweden’s museum of cultural history and ethnography, founded by Artur Hazelius in 1873. It collects and interprets material culture from Sweden’s past and present and is one of the country’s major cultural museums.
Permanent displays cover domestic interiors, folk art, furniture, costume and social history from the early modern period to the present day. The museum building on Djurgården is a prominent, large early 20th-century structure noted for its historicist architecture.
The museum’s collection program and public exhibitions grew from 19th-century efforts to preserve Swedish folk culture and have since become a national reference for cultural history and conservation.
Located on the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, the museum sits close to other major attractions such as Skansen and the Vasa Museum and is readily accessible from the city centre.
- Founding: Established by Artur Hazelius in 1873, the museum was created to document and preserve Swedish cultural history.

How to Get to Nordic Museum #
Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet) sits on Djurgården island in central Stockholm. From Stockholm Central you can take the heritage tram line 7 (Spårvagn 7) toward Waldemarsudde and get off at the “Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet” stop; it’s a short 2-5 minute walk from the stop to the museum entrance. Alternatively, ferries and sightseeing boats call at the Djurgården piers in summer and drop you within a few minutes’ walk.
If driving from central Stockholm, follow Strandvägen/Djurgårdsvägen onto Djurgården; parking is available nearby but limited on busy days.
Tips for Visiting Nordic Museum #
- Go early on a weekday or late in the afternoon-Djurgården gets busy midday with ferry and bus traffic, and the museum is noticeably quieter at opening and toward closing.
- Combine your visit with nearby Skansen or the Vasa Museum and arrive by tram/bus to avoid finding scarce parking on Djurgården on summer weekends.
- If you want fewer crowds in the costume and domestic-history rooms, head there first; the larger grand-hall and temporary exhibitions draw the bulk of visitors later in the day.
Best Time to Visit Nordic Museum #
Visit on a weekday during shoulder seasons to avoid the summer crowds and enjoy the exhibits at a relaxed pace.
