Nino Konis Santana National Park
National Park Coastal and forest national park protecting marine biodiversity
Nino Konis Santana National Park in Lautém protects coastal forests, marine areas and offshore islands; visitors travel for sea caves, diving and snorkelling, coastal scenery and opportunities to see marine life and endemic birds in remote settings.
Nino Konis Santana National Park is a protected area in eastern Timor-Leste that covers terrestrial and coastal environments in Lautém Municipality. It was established as the country’s first national park and is named for the resistance leader Nino Konis Santana.
Within the park are steep forested mountains, coastal plains and offshore islets that support a range of wildlife including seabird colonies, reef systems and endemic forest species. The mix of marine and terrestrial habitats makes the park important for biodiversity conservation.
The park was declared in 2007 to provide national-level protection for ecosystems on the far east of Timor-Leste and to recognise the area’s environmental and cultural values. Management frameworks since then have focused on combining conservation with community use and ecotourism potential.
The park occupies the easternmost portion of Timor-Leste in Lautém Municipality and includes the rugged inland massif around Mount Paitchau and nearby coastal areas such as Tutuala and Jaco Island.
- Establishment and scope: Declared a national park in 2007 and named for resistance leader Nino Konis Santana, it protects both terrestrial and marine habitats on Timor-Leste's eastern tip.
What to See #
- Mount Paitchau (Irimau): Mount Paitchau (Irimau) is a rugged inland massif within the park that supports forest habitats and upland species.
- Jaco Island: Jaco Island is a small, uninhabited island at Timor-Leste's eastern tip included in the park's protected coastal and marine zone.
How to Get to Nino Konis Santana National Park #
Nino Konis Santana National Park occupies the far-eastern tip of Timor‑Leste (Lautém municipality). The usual gateway towns are Lospalos and Tutuala: reach Lospalos by road from other parts of Timor‑Leste, then continue by 4x4 on largely unpaved coastal roads east toward Tutuala and the park headquarters. Local drivers, guides or organized tours are strongly recommended because roads inside the park can be rough.
To reach Jaco Island (part of the park) you must take a local boat from Tutuala or nearby coastal villages; boat services are seasonal, so arrange transport and a guide in Lospalos/Tutuala in advance.
Tips for Visiting Nino Konis Santana National Park #
- Plan visits in the dry season (roughly May-October) for the most reliable access to beaches, reefs and inland trails across the park's islands and coastal zones.
- Arrange boat transport and local guides from Tutuala or Lospalos if you want to reach Jaco Island and other marine sites - boats and basic services are run locally and schedules are irregular.
- Focus time on both marine and terrestrial highlights: visitors often head straight for Jaco Island's beaches but miss inland limestone karst features and traditional villages near Tutuala that are within the park.
