New Lanark
Historical Site 18th-century industrial village pioneering factory-era social reform
New Lanark’s 18th-century cotton mills and workers’ housing illustrate industrial-era social reform under Robert Owen; restored mill buildings, riverside walks and a visitor centre explain textile production and social experiments.
New Lanark is an 18th-century cotton mill village on the River Clyde in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Founded in 1786 by David Dale and developed by reformer Robert Owen, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for its early model industrial community.
The site includes restored mill buildings, workers’ housing, a visitor centre with museum displays and working textile demonstrations. Interpretation focuses on industrial processes and progressive social experiments in welfare and education; many of the main mill buildings are open to the public. Walking routes along the river and through the village show the original layout and water-management features.
The mills were established by David Dale in 1786 and expanded under the management of Robert Owen in the early 19th century, who introduced schooling and welfare measures for workers. Over the 20th century the site declined with the local textile industry and has since been conserved and partly restored for heritage and community use.
The village sits on the River Clyde near the town of Lanark in southern Scotland. It is within South Lanarkshire and functions as a short drive from regional roads connecting to central Scotland.
- Visitor services: Guided tours and textile demonstrations run daily from the visitor centre, and audio guides are available in several languages.
- Best viewpoints: Lookouts on the riverside and from the restored mill rooftops give clear views of the village layout and the River Clyde.
