Main image

Nevado de Colima is a volcanic massif on the border between the states of Jalisco and Colima in western Mexico, forming part of the Colima volcanic complex and notable for including one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes.

Hiking routes and highland viewpoints offer views across the volcanic complex and toward the active cone; the area comprises two main summits within the same massif and highland ecosystems that contrast with surrounding lowland agricultural areas. Trails and rural roads provide most approaches, but conditions vary with season and volcanic activity.

Geologically the site is a composite volcanic complex in which an older, eroded edifice (the Nevado) sits alongside a younger, active cone that has produced frequent historical eruptions and is continuously monitored. The active cone has influenced local land use and access patterns over the past centuries.

The massif sits where Jalisco meets Colima in western Mexico, rising above agricultural valleys and small towns; it dominates the local skyline and is visible from several nearby highland roads.

  • Two summits: Contains two principal summits: an older, largely inactive Nevado and the younger, frequently active Volcán de Colima within the same massif.
  • Access and safety: Mountain weather can change rapidly and high-elevation approaches require proper equipment; parts of the complex are monitored by volcanic observatories and access may be restricted.

What to See #

  • Nevado (older summit): An older, heavily eroded summit that forms part of the Colima volcanic complex; reached by highland trails and valued for panoramic views back toward the active cone.
  • Volcán de Colima (active cone): The active cone in the same volcanic complex, frequently monitored for eruptions and often producing ash plumes and lava flows; access is usually restricted during eruptive periods.
