Nereditsa Church

The Church of the Transfiguration at Nereditsa is a small Orthodox church in Novgorod Oblast, Russia, constructed in 1198 and noted for its medieval wall paintings. It is important for the survival of high-quality 12th-century fresco decoration from pre-Mongol Rus.

The church’s interior originally featured extensive fresco cycles depicting biblical scenes and saints; these frescoes form the primary reason for the church’s significance and are a focus for study and conservation. Visitors come to view the architecture and the restored medieval paintings.

The building was damaged during the 20th century, particularly in World War II, and has undergone conservation and restoration work to stabilize and recover the frescoes and structure. Scholarly attention has focused on the frescoes as examples of early Russian ecclesiastical art.
