The National Theatre of Japan is a state-supported performing-arts complex in Tokyo dedicated primarily to traditional Japanese theatre forms. It opened in the mid-20th century to provide regular venues and preservation for arts such as kabuki, bunraku (puppet theatre) and classical dance.

Auditoriums of different sizes host full-scale productions, smaller recitals and experimental presentations, while on-site exhibition and learning spaces present material on the theatre forms and the history of performance. The theatre stages seasonal programmes, festivals and touring shows focused on preserving and presenting Japan’s performing-arts heritage.

Located in central Tokyo, the venue functions both as a performance centre and as a public resource for education about traditional Japanese theatrical traditions.

  • Artform focus: Specialises in traditional Japanese performing arts such as kabuki, bunraku and classical dance, with a year-round season of performances and touring productions.
  • Facilities: Operated by the national cultural authorities, it provides multiple auditoria and an exhibition area supporting performances and public education about traditional theatre.
